I'm driving an '06 Sonata which has a 6 disc changer with the amp and sub. The CD player portion of the head unit is mechanically messed up so I thought I bought a replacement, but actually bought the single disc player.
That really isn't a big deal to me, I don't need 6 discs in at a time, but even though the cable harness is the same, I plug it in and get no audio out. So unless this new head is broken, is it possible to use the single player in my car? Is the pin-out of the two units different? I'd be able to just rewire my harness if it is. Any help is appreciated. Thank! |

I believe the single disk player also has a built-in amplifier. It is used in the base set-up without a separate amp and sub.
You are now feeding an amplified signal into a low-level input to the amp, which will not work. You can buy an adapter that will change the output from the radio into a low-level signal that the amp can then use. Search the web and E-Bay. Also, check out Hyundai service - www.hmaservice.com for additional info. Or exchange it for the same type radio that came with the car. Quote:

I doubt the single disk will work even with the adapter. If you want to keep it stock replace the radio with the same kind. I'm surprised Hyundai didn't use a different plug for the 6-disc radio to prevent someone from plugging in an incompatible radio at the factory.
I your basic slash-n-burn when I replaced my factory radio with an aftermarket unit.

Ok, couple more questions before I send it back (the unit was only $20 shipped, so I hate to start the return process):
If the single disc unit has an amp built in, A: wouldn't that high level output into my amp given me some kind of distorted music through the speakers? I got completely NO sound at all... unless the amp has some sort of level detection circuit? B: if the single disc unit does have an amp in it, can I just bypass my amp and use the head for the 4 door speakers (I guess 6 actually with the HF drivers at ear level)? I just bought a 10" sub and amp I'm about to put in, so I don't really care about the rear stock "sub". I'm sure the external amp is better quality than the head-unit amp, but they are both stock, so how much worse could it be? part a: makes me think that maybe the pinout into the harness is different on this unit... so if anyone has any info on that, I'd be appreciated. Again, given that this thing only cost $20 and is supposed to be functioning, I'd rather not have to ship it back only to have to buy another one (which costs more). I really don't care about having 6 discs in at a time. Again, thanks for any help! |

So I decided to poke around a bit more. I pulled the actual CD player portions from the SD (single disc) unit as well as the 6D (six disc) unit.
Inside of each look identical. There is no amp inside the SD. So for giggles i put the SD inside the 6D to see if I could get anywhere with that. The motors move, but the brain doesn't recognize it, so that fix is out. When I have the SD unit all together and plug it into the car, everything works just fine, but I get no audio out. That makes me think that perhaps the only think I need to do is still turn the amp on. Maybe the SD player won't send an amp on signal. So is there another way to trigger the amp to turn on to test this theory? I know when reading about setting up my sub amp, I could have tapped into either the amp on or the antennae on signal. Does the SD player send an antennae on signal that I could tap into for the amp? These two units are just so **** similar, it seems like it just needs a bit of finessing to get one to work in place of the other. |
