Wife just had 2 new tires put on. the front tires were pretty worn out and the rear tires still looked good. anyways they put the new tires on the rear and put the rear used tires on the front. now she said she is hearing a roaring noise that goes away after she drives a littler bit. i took it for a test drive and i kinda hear a roaring noise coming from the front of the car. almost sounds like a large truck tire going down the highway. but i dont think these small stock tires should sound like that right? could the tire be bad even though they look decent? broken belt of something inside them?

I would have put the new Tires on the front, being it is a Front Wheel drive Car. Plus you are not supposed to mix sizes and brands.
And once a Sonata becomes unbalanced it can sound like a 747 while applying the brakes. But whatever it was, you need to go back to the tire people! |

Usually the new tires always go on the back, not the front. Something to do with handling thru turns...(according the poster on the wall last time I got new tires).
I am not to high on just replacing 2 tires at a time, especially with ESC. I am guessing there isn't much life in the old tires moved to the front...which makes alot of noise. You didn't buy Uniroyal 'Tiger Paws"? That might explain the 'roar'...

and also the Sonata has a super sensitive front end and prone to problems. I wonder if they even balanced the Tires? |

Which is why I paid for lifetime alignment for the Sonata...they align it every rotation...

Some tires are noisy. What kind did you get? So long as they are on the same axle they shouldn't cause undue noise.
I once bought a set of off brand tires from a local dealer. I wound up having the dealer taking them off and put a set of Toyos on and the problem went away. I vote for bad tires, personally. And I always replace the full set of tires. Last tires I bought were Kumhos and they ride like a carpet and in my view are quieter than the Michelins that came off the car. And one more thing. Make sure where they are manufactured. I am not at all keen on tires made in China. Japan, Korea, the U.S. and other countries are OK, but I think they cut corners over in China. Just my personal observation.

What a crock of poo. I always put new tires on front, I guess its opinion do what you want. If you want to get EXTRA life out your old tires, than put new tires on back and the olds up front. Rear tires don't really wear as much as the front tires. Front tires do 70 percent of braking, are responsible for traction on accelerating and turning, PLUS if you put new tires up front and the car pulls you may have an alignment issue. New tires are straight and true and shouldn't pull, used worn tires can. The Michelins are quiet, the Sumitomo's I bought make a humming noise, some times make noise so don't worry about it too much.

While at Firestone for 30K Service, they had a pamphlet explaing that if only buying 2 new tires for a FWD vehicle, that the new tires should be mounted on rear to avoid oversteering and loss of control. Pamphlet said that mounting new tires on front can cause the older tires in back to loose traction much easier and spin out, while mounting them on the back allows them to maintain traction better thus reducing oversteer. Made sense to me, however I always purchase 4 new tires when old ones need replacing to avoid this exact problem.
