Thumbs up

I have an 09 Sonata. I parked it the other day and now when I go to start it I can't my key to turn the ignition. The steering wheel is also completely stuck. I've had it on various cars where the steering wheel "gets stuck" and you just have to turn it a few times and it unlocks.

However I'm completely stumped here, no matter how much I try I can't get my steering wheel/ignition to turn!

Any help would be appreciated!

KC's steering wheel sometimes gets stuck when I remove the key when the SW is in the wrong position. I can always get the key in after I gently rotate the SW just a touch.

You might also try removing the negative battery cable for a few minutes. I think the SW lock is electrical. Try moving the wheel just a bit to see if you can unstick it then reconnect the battery.

Now that I think of it, I bet this is a really common problem. I wonder if the service writer can walk you thru a procedure?

Steering wheel locked? Won't it release if you start the car while turning the wheel a little or something like that? It happens if you turn the steering wheel after the car is off.

Turn the wheel as far into the direction where the wheels are facing right now and hold it there while you try to turn the key.

The exact same thing happened to me on my 2009 GLS last winter. Unfortunately it was in a parking ramp. I could get the key in the ignition, but not as easily as normal. Once in, I could not turn the key to start the car. I called Hyundai roadside assistance. Tow truck came and that guy tried everything he could think of and could not budge the key. We ended up towing it to my dealer. We left it there overnight and OF COURSE the next day they called me and said they tried it twice and had no problem starting it. I have had no such problem since. Whatever was making it stick must have gotten unstuck during the process of hooking up the car to the truck and towing, etc. The dealer said they would not replace the ignition cylinder unless it happened again.
