Hey everyone.

Well, we've been beating this little trooper of a car for some time now. And it's been running well for awhile now. But all the sudden, the check engine light went on, the engine began to idle rough, lost most power (difficult to drive over 30mph), and the exhaust does not smell clean. It doesn't sound like I've lost any one cylinder, it just sounds hoarse.

so here's the questions:

1. does it hurt the engine to drive it (say to a autozone to get a fault code to register)? How about to get to work till I can find the time to troubleshoot, get parts, and fix properly?

2. does anybody know what it is without having to go get the fault code read based on the description I gave?

I'm new to this so any help would be GREAT!!!

Thanks,
Ken <><

if I had to guess I'd say probably your spark plug wires or spark plugs. I'm betting a wire went dead and your running on 3 cylinders. I had that happen before, where it felt like it was going to die at idle and shook and that is what it was. That's covered under warranty though.

Thumbs down

First of all, if the CEL is on, then there is a code stored in the ECM. Get the code from the ECM, this will prevent any guessing.

Yes, go to AutoZone, get the code read and post the code here

Just wanted to let you all know the problem. We took it to autozone to check out the check engine malfunction code. It registered random cylinder misfire and misfires in cylinders one and four. We both recognized it as a bad ignition coil. So I went to a junk yard and picked up the whole bracket for 50$. It went right in and it works great again.

Thanks for all your help guys!
