Sporadic Loss Of Power Hyundai Terracan

Hi All - I am new to the site and I am wondering if anybody can assist me?

Hyundai Terracan 2.9 CRTD (2004) - Auto (Mileage 45K)

I have a couple of problems with my Hyundia Terracan

I don’t think either problems are related though as the second has been a problem for the past year but it never happened enough to warrant mentioning it at service

First problem

I can put my foot down sometimes and the rev’s will build as normal, then for no apparent reason they will suddenly just die, and it feels like the vehicle is kind of misfiring or the same sort of effect you get when you have water in the HT Cap of a 50cc 2 stoke motor bike, but it does not stall.

If I then back off the accelerator and re-apply the power, all is fine and it will quite happily carry on as normal. It can be very dangerous when over taking, if it happens at the wrong time…

Second problem

Also when I put my foot down sometimes the engine takes on a different sound, a deeper louder roar under load, but if I take my foot off the accelerator and re apply again the engine sound returns to normal… Any idea’s anyone?

I appreciate any feedback that may assist in sorting out both problems

A common running problem with modern cars are faulty brake switches-Terra's also suffer from this problem. It causes a running problem because it sends the wrong signal to the ECU saying that the pedal has been applied when it has not.

This problem happens while I am accelerating not while I am stationary? Would that make a difference?

Many Tincans have this same problem and Hyundai club is correct if you still have warranty take it in and get them to check the brake light switch as there have been oodles of faulty ones they then send all sorts of messages to the ecm and then the tincans play up- It is a genuine remedy although it sounds wrong.

If you find you still have some issues after its fixed there may be a fault on your injectors. But get back to that dealer whilst Hyundai are paying for the bits- you know that makes sense to your pocket!!

Thanks guys that was good information. This has now been replaced and solved the power problem to a degree. Aparently the brake switch issue is a real problem with the Terrican as it sends all types of signals to the ECU that creates issues

They also found flaking inside the petrol tank which meant they had to change the whole of the fuel system, tank, injectors/jets, Fuel filter, pipes, common rail etc etc

The only problem is now they have caused a new problem that they can not solve where buy you start the car up it ticks over great but on selecting drive on the auto box and putting your foot on the accelerator the revs will not move off tick over and the car sits stationary. You can select any gear but you get the same result. What you have to do is keep flicking from park to rev or park to drive and finally the fault clears itself until next time you start it. This is an intermitant fault so it is hard to trace and it is not leaving a code

Any ideas? as I am not very happy considering its been in the work shop for the last 2.5 weeks...

Flaking tanks are also a problem on other Hyundai's. Its had to say what your problem might be. It might be a selector switch or accelerator pedal. It needs careful studying of the engine parameters via diagnostic tool at the time of fault

Hi folks, I too have the same problem with intermittent cut in power as described and it can be dangerous if it happens during overtaking or at junctions.
What i have found 99% of the time is that after filling up if i drive for long periods without cornering ie, motorways etc it does NOT happen which would confirm other postings regarding flaking paint or other foreign matter in the tank being disturbed when cornering ?
Does anyone know the cost of replacing the brake switch (sorry but i am currently working in France for the summer but there is a good network of dealerships over here if god forbid i need to use one)
The poor quality of the wheels, the heater problem i and others have posted on apart, i think it's a great all round towing vehicle.

hi guys,i have just had a similar problem with my 2004 passenger terra...(its my second one,my first was a commecial!)
now are these two problems below related??
bought th terra in 06...still with 12 months warranty left ...reported at least twice to my main hyundai dealer the intermittent but sudden lost of power when accelerating away!!...this happened twice at junctions.!!! very unsettling!!...ie revs would just die for a split second!!!!!

hyundai dealer twice came back after servicing to report "cant find anything wrong,sir"

5-6 weeks ago orange "check engine "light started coming on when accelerating!

3 weeks ago ...had to call out AA to rescue me as jeep wouldn't start!!!
drove it (or rather had it delivered) ..to my other mechanic who services my other family car!!
his prognosis is injector problems and maybe high pressure pump problems....we are talking a repair bill here of 3-4000 euro (yes thousands!!!)

my question is....
was the intermittent/sudden loss of power while the jeep was under warranty a sign that there were problems brewing with the fuelling/injectors/flaking fuel tank???
appreciate any advice
