Good morning all, I am wondering if anyone knows if there is a tracker fit kit that works with the factory Terracan roof rails. Since the tracker system is discontinued finding information or a drawing of the parts has proved very difficult. Thule recommends a system that doesn't work with the factory racks so I don't have a lot of confidence in any other recommendations they might have for this car.
I am having the same random hard starting issues that I have heard described often. The problem only occurs when hot and sounds like a no fuel condition when the engine is cranking. There is plenty of fuel and I use the primer bulb to refill the filters to make sure there is fuel available at the pump. I suspect there is an electrical glitch or control circuit issue that is keeping the ECM from firing the injectors. When the engine is cranked it sounds like it is spinning way to fast without any resistance, like trying to clear a flooded condition on a gasoline motor by keeping the throttle full open while cranking. I have inspected the harness and cleaned all the connections. I suspect the Crank pulse sensor has an intermittent problem but haven't been able to catch it. My scan tool won't communicate with the ECM and the dealers here in Chile believe that they can charge Ferrari prices because they wear while coveralls, drink espresso, and mop the floors in the service bays. My meter is in the car for the next instance. Thanks for the info on the timing belt and tentioners. I am going to the parts store right now, that is if I can find my way there. I have the records from all the past owners and don't see the belts or pulleys being changed. I put all new filters and fluids but haven't done much else. Is the serpentine belt the actual timing belt ,or is there a timing chain or gear set under the front cover? If that's what keeps the cam in sync with the crank I would think the loss of the belt would be disastrous. I have owner the car 6 months and am enjoying it. I only wish there was a way to get it to make power before 1800 RPM makes for some slow starts and painfully slow recoveries on the speed bumps that litter the streets of Santiago. Thanks in advance for all your help. |

Welcome to the forums 1) I can't help you with info about the Thule system. Best way to go is to find the parts and "try" them on. Have in mind that the Terracans roof rails are closed at both ends, meaning that the Thule track system posts cannot be slided in as they should. 2) About the hard start when engine is warm (hot), check this thread Hard start when warm There you will find a troubleshooting chart for such condition. One member suggested using a good quality fuel additive to clear any carbon deposits. Op suggested using Forte diesel cleaner (Diesel IMV Cleaner) that should clean up injectors, EGR valve and other important items that get dirty with time. Let us know your findings on this issue. 3) The timing belt is different from the serpentine belt. The timing belt is behind the distribution cover and to replace it, a lot of disassembling must be done. When doing the timing belt, other items should be replaced too, like the internal tensioneers and both cams and crankshaft oil seals. You can download the service manual (mechanical) for the J3 engine here: Download ENGINE MECHANICAL J3.pdf from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way BTW, any time an engine refuses to start, but when cranking it sounds like "going too fast or too easy", it is always a sign that the timing belt is broken. If this is the case, the engine will not start no matter what you do, so I don't think this is your problem since you say the engine will eventually start and the problem is only when engine is hot. Let us know your findings.

The problem finally happened when it was cold, first start of the day (of course the beginning of our beach vacation).
Disconnected the battery for 5 minutes and it fired right over as soon as I reconnected the battery. I broke down and went to the mechanic, he put it on the computer and found the brake sensor to be intermittent. cleaned the contacts and crimped the connections to make sure there was good contact all around. Problem solved so far. He's gonna get the parts for the timing belt and serpentine belt as well as the pulleys. I have a feeling that will be the next thing to go. Hope that gives you some insight. Never would have gone looking there but you never can tell when or where the computer decides to get picky. Good luck. |
