How to get to the Starter Motor Excel 1996

Hello, I have a old Hyundai Excel Lx 1996 and the starter motor in it is dead,
I'm already ordering a new starter motor. I was wondering if there is a Picture
guide on how to access the Starter motor in a Excel lx.

My current starter motor which is located under the engine with all these pipes
and the air filter in the way, I tried going under but the starter motor is to high
up so i figured the only way is from the top. I'm finding it hard to get to it with
the pipes in the way.

Hi the only way to get to your starter is from the gearbox side, you will have to remove the air filter box and battery so you have some room to play with.
There are 2 bolts that come from the starter motor side into the gearbox, these will need to be removed and then there is a single nut that just holds the positive lead from the battery to be removed, and then last but not least just a small ground wire that can just be unclipped from the starter, but of a tussle but that's the simplest way to do it, after its unbolted and wires removed it is easiest to just drop it under the car instead of trying to take it out from the top, way too many hoses and pipes in the way.
Installation is a reversal, feed starter from the bottom attach positive and ground wires to hold it up for you. From the top of the car just hold it with one hand and install the bolts with the other.

Hey thanks for replying, i will try this after work today, Is it necessary to remove some of the pipes that are laying on top of the starter motor? Just so i have a bit more room, Cheers

Make sure you disconnect the battery before starting to remove (negative lead), maybe I'm lucky to have an older carburetta model, I have the manual (1986-1996), there was nothing sweeter than working on a old flat head with all the stuff within easy reach, Turtlee good answer and as I have not worked on a fuel injected model I can quote from the manual:

On some vehicles, it may be necessary to remove the exhaust pipe(s) or frame cross member to gain access to the starter motor, in extreme cases it may even be necessary to unbolt the mounts and raise the engine slightly to get the starter out

Thanks for reply, i don't think i can remove the exhaust because i don't have a car lift only a small jack :S. I tried getting to the starter motor again today, but its still stuck under all these hoses and pipes. I'll upload a picture of how and where it is after the air filter box is removed. Also i can seem to find the bolts that hold the start motor. And suggestions on what hoses or pipes to remove? Thank you

Turtlele try this link as it has some more info, the manual says:

1. remove air cleaner assembly
2. you need access from the top and the bottom
3. disconnect main battery cable
4. disconnect the solinoid
5. on later models remove the EGR valve
6. disconnect the speedometer cable from the transaxle
7. unscrew the starter mounting bolts and take out the starter motor.

Like your pictures, if you remove anything get a felt pen and mark it so you won't have any confusion when reconnecting (especially the hoses) and turtlele you can mark on your photo's as well...the LINK looks pretty good, I found another link but the wanted cash up front for an answer.

Hey Sanjeet, i tried doing it your method, but i have no clue where or what the EGR valve is lol and the speedometer cable. I'm not really good with mechanical stuff :S

It means EGR:

Exhaust gas Recirculation System

and its mounted on the manifold, if you need to remove it the manual says to renew the gasket. so whatever you pull off mark it and write yourself some notes, I have to do the starter motor on my 1992, but I suspect it will be relatively simple, some times if you search youtube you can find a video (remembering the Hyundai is more basic Mitshubishi than Hyundai)...the speedo cable is attached to the gear box.
