Talking How to get pic as your Avatar when too big?!

Every time I put a URL link in the space for creating an Avatar it says file too large, WTF how do I take the pic it's the front of the car as you look straight down at it and I'd like it for my Avatar!
Is there a way to make it a smaller file so I can use it as my Avatar, I took it with my iPhone as that's all I'm using till my laptop is repaired!?(darn kid)lol
Any info would be great, I know on the computer you can shrink them done I'm not sure if that's only for pics off a digi cam it's been sooo long since I touched my laptop my 10 year old son loaded both of them with viruses as well as fried his netbook and my 17" HP laptop I'm on my 2nd since he started using them!

Yeah, I send my cell photos to Photobucket and use their editing tools to shrink the photo. I use 500x500 or smaller. Then I copy/paste the URL and enter it into the field provided on the page where you change your avatar photo. Done!
