Default MPG and Computer Calculations

I have a 2012 Veloster and am monitoring the mpg. I am very pleased with the car but have a question about the computer computation of the mileage. I just made a trip on the interstate (about 3 hours) at 60 to 70 mph with cruise on. The tank was full at that time or at least 3/4 full. My car computer mileage stayed around 37mpg and inched up as the trip progressed. On the way home following the same route with the car at half a tank and below, my mileage decreased in increments to a low of 35.3 -- even though I drove the same route, used cruise, etc. Is the mileage shown dependent on the current level of gas in the car? How does this work? I am a newbie to Hyundai. I also did not know the computer resets mpg for each new tank of gas. First car I have had that does this. Your input is appreciated! Love my car! Happy Holidays!

I'll bet that you were going downhill on the trip out and therefore uphill on the trip back. Check elevations of your origination and destination and I'll bet the destination is lower than your origination. Even a few hundred feet can make a significant difference on MPG over a long trip.

Default Actually the opposite

My trip upstate was actually that -- toward a higher part of the state. The return trip would have been lower in elevation. One difference perhaps: the trip up was weather free (no rain, little wind). The return trip had some wind and rain - approaching cold front and subsequent storms. Maybe the wind resistance made the difference.

Yeah, wind can have a significant impact on MPGs. Around here the wind can add/subtract up to 10-15 MPGs depending on its intensity and direction. A neighbor told me that one time on I-80 going east from Cheyenne into Nebraska, he got 45-50 MPGs from a very strong westerly wind compared to his normal 35 MPGs highway.
