Just a note from an expensive mistake. Had'nt bought a new car in years and am on a fixed income and thought that since gas was going up, it would be a good time to do it. Went in and spoke to a salesman and bought a car at Thornton Road Hyundai near Atlanta, Georgia. Everything was up front until we got to the end of the purchase. Found that they were asking $600 in documentation fees. (Was not told about the documentation fees until the end of the paperwork.) I even asked the manager about this and he said the $600 amount was required by all Hyundai dealers in the area and that he could'nt change it. Since I'm a honest person, I took his word on it and completed the purchase. Now I'm finding something out that was totally different than what the manager told me.
I'm finding out that the those fees were inflated compared to others and that he could have reduced the fees if he had wanted to. For the most part, those fees are totally profit. (I found that documentation fees in GA should'nt cost more than $100 in reality) I admit that this is my mistake but I wanted to make sure no one else makes the same mistake. Remember to always do your homework, talk to friends, use these type of forums, and research the internet to find the best deal. Don't be taken advantage of. I wish I had did more research on this before my purchase. Of course after this, I want be going back to Thornton Road Hyundai to do business. |

I am sorry that you had to deal with this. It is sad to hear that dealers are still taking advantage of their customers this way when they are more than making enough profits from the sheer number of cars they are selling each month, with the Sonatas and Elantras leading the way. It is a shame that this type of gouging happens with all car manufacturers but it is the less expensive car buyers who seem to be hurt the most because they are the ones that are the least able to absorb the extra fees. Thank you for sharing your experience and reaffirming that future buyers need to do their research on not just the price of the car but also the total cost of that new car. The silver lining to your story is that you will should recoup your $500 loss within the first year or so and be able to use your tale to help others prepare for their car purchasing experience.

I bought my Hyundai in Brunswick, GA and they tried the same thing on me, only this one tried to charge $800!!!! I sat and argued with him for about an hour and kept pointing out things on the list and asking him how much he had in stock and telling him all these prices could be much less just by running to Staples. I ended up talking him down to about $150. I think they wanted $125 for PRINTER PAPER!!! Gotta watch out for dealers, they'll charge as much as they can, always ask for a detailed list of the dealer fees.

If I've learned one thing in my 71 years it's this: Whenever the salesperson shakes your hand and pats you on the back, he's just looking for the soft spot to stick in the shaft. He really does not give a **** about you. The ONLY thing he cares about is his bottom line. End of story!
