Hi,

I have a 2006 Hyundai Tucson 2.7 4x4 which I like very much. It just turned 61,000 and I have been told I should replace the timing belt. I really dont have the funds right now to do that, would anyone know how critical it is to do this at 60,000 miles or do I have a little more mileage before I should do this?

If you wait, one of two things could happen: *Nothing, or the belt could break and you would be out thousands to replace the engine instead of a few hundred to replace just the belt. *If it breaks, there will be damage done to the valves and various other internal components, which will not covered under warranty.

I was told that this job done at the Dealer would cost between $700-$800 because they would also replace the water pump at the same time. I wish it was just a few hundred dollars, then it would not be a problem.

Tell them you don't need a water pump. Ask around and get a better price from a small garage.

700-800 dollars is outrageous for timing belt replacement. If you are just replacing the belt it should be 300-400 to get the job done. The 2.7 is a great motor and it will not hurt for you to wait on the replacement for now. Ive seen 2.7's go a long ways on the original belt, but better safe than sorry.

It makes sense to have the water pump replaced at the same time as the timing belt. If your original pump fails before your next belt renewal, it could snap the belt. Also, if the pump does fail, you will need a new belt again!

we replaced t-belts and drive belts on tucsons for 375... 7-800 is crazy.

I have very rarely seen water pumps go bad on the 2.7l, but they are driven by the t-belt. my opinion is to
replaced them at 120 not 60.

besides if you are the original owner and the pump goes bad before 100k then its covered by powertrain.

Is it true that the belt must be a Hyundai Genuine part? I'm in the same situation as this person, extended unemployment and wanting to get it done soon but as cheaply (reasonably) as possible.
