'02 Matrix Roof Aerial

How do you replace this aerial. Thought it would just unscrew from the mount.
Tried that and end up with aerial in hand and stub of metal on base, should have known as the aerial was already scratched and not flush with mount.
It's just that the stock aerial looks wrong and I would like to put a trendier short one on.

New aerial will screw onto that stub, but short aerial will give poor reception.
