Unfortunately I have the very same problem with My Getz--the radiator fan only works when the air conditioner is engaged--I have printed off the PDF but have no idea how to test the ECT-(Engine Coolant Temperature--would appreciate any help in this matter

Using the GETZ ECT SENSOR TESTING.PDF as reference, you will need an ohm tester (digital) and a thermometer (precision). If you have an OBDii scanner will be best.
First, locate ECT sensor according to your engine. PDF attached to post #8 in this thread will help you locate it. Remove it and test following the GETZ ECT SENSOR TESTING.PDF. Suggestion: Before removing sensor, check that its connections are OK, and there is no rust of gunk inside connector. Check cables too.
