Hi
I have a Getz 2004 model with 162000km on the clock. Until 2 months ago i had tappet noise only at startup and it normally goes away when its hot. Now its noisy when doing anything above 2000rpm, obviously a bit quieter than when cold. Does this model have hydraulic tappets? if not, can it be set manually & what is the clearance settings? Thanks |

You do not specify which engine is in your Getz. Anyway, all of them have hydraulic tappets (lifters) so there is no adjustment here. If you consider the tapped noise is abnormally high, I suggest having your engine looked by a qualified mechanic. 162 thou kms is not that much, but it may be a sign of oil contamination due to carbon buildup, making oil pressure under tappets lower than what is needed. Have you replaced the timing belt? By now, you should have done it at 80 thousand kms and about ready for the second timing belt replacement.

Just to add a bit more gasoline to this fire... According to my mechanic, hydraulic tapped noise when everything else is OK (no signs of carbon buildup in valves, no measurable wear on the camshafts, no timing belt streching out, no oil galleries and in-block ducts clogged) it can mean one of two things: Low cost situation: Your engine is running low on oil. More than a quart is missing. Expensive situation: Your oil pump is failing.

UPDATE ON HYDRAULIC TAPPETS.
Just checked with Hyundai service manuals. The 1.1 SOHC liter engine does not have hydraulic tappets (lifters) which mean that the valve clearance must be adjusted from time to time. Valve clearance Warm: 0.2 mm intake, 0.25 mm exhaust. Valve cleanrance Cold: 0.1 mm intake, 0.17 mm exhaust. All the DOHC engines (including diesel) all have hydraulic tappets. The 1.3 liter SOHC is not equipped with hydraulic tappets, but it has HLA (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters) that may become worn out and may need replacement. This devices are part of the rocker arms that push the valves. UPDATE ON POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR TAPPET/VALVE NOISE AFTER 15 MM in WARM ENGINE: 1) Too low or Too high oil level. 2) Oil degraded or contaminated. 3) Too low oil pressure (cause by 1 or 2, or oil pump failure) 4) Faulty HLA (1.3 liter SOHC engine only)
